About This Course

Osteoporosis is a common disease associated with increased fracture risk, morbidity, mortality, and healthcare burden, yet it remains significantly underdiagnosed and undertreated. This lecture will review osteoporosis therapies and their clinical implications for dental practice, with an emphasis on medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Participants will review the current understanding of MRONJ, including diagnostic criteria, staging, risk factors, and clinical management strategies for patients undergoing dental procedures. Emphasis will be placed on evidence-based treatment planning and interdisciplinary collaboration to support fracture prevention and safe dental care.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the epidemiology and clinical burden of osteoporosis, including its impact on fracture risk, morbidity, and mortality.
  • Review common osteoporosis therapies and their effects on fracture risk.
  • Recognise the diagnostic criteria and staging of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.
  • Compare MRONJ risk in osteoporosis patients versus oncology patients.
  • Identify risk factors that influence MRONJ development.
  • Apply evidence-based recommendations for dental treatment planning in at-risk patients.
  • Promote interdisciplinary communication to reduce MRONJ risk.
