Mission
The mission of the
Florida Academy of General Dentistry is to serve as an advocate for
general dentists, to promote improved delivery of patient care by
fostering continuing education and to increase public awareness of
quality dentistry and those who provide it throughout the State of
Florida.
Vision
To be the premier organization of general dentists, dedicated to
improving the quality and delivery of comprehensive dental services,
education, health promotion and wellness.
Who we are
The Florida Academy of General Dentistry is one of the most active
state Academies in the nation. We represent more than 1,600 of the
37,000 members
currently in the Academy of General Dentistry.
We are the only organization dedicated solely to the general
dentist. The Florida Academy of General Dentistry offers a variety of
quality continuing education courses throughout the year, to assist
our members in providing quality care and dental education to their
patients. Other activities in which the Florida AGD is involved
include promoting general dentistry to the public, publishing (our
newsletter), and serving as a voice for the general practitioner.
What is a general dentist?
A general dentist is the primary dental care provider for patients of
all ages. The general dentist is responsible for the diagnosis,
treatment, management and overall coordination of services related to
patients' oral health needs.
What is the Academy of General
Dentistry?
The Academy of General Dentistry is a non-profit international
organization of 37,000 dentists from the United States, its
territories and Canada who are dedicated to continuing dental
education to provide the best possible care to the patient. It was
founded in 1952.
When a dentist is a member of the
Academy of General Dentistry . . .
It means the dentist is dedicated to continuing education as a means
of staying up-to-date on the latest procedures and technologies.
Dentistry is ever-changing and continues to grow with new research and
discovery. The dentist who is up-to-date in general dentistry is
better able to offer the patient the variety of choices currently
available in diagnosis and treatment.
Members dedicated to continuing dental education have made a conscious
commitment to their patients to remain current with the advances and
changes in the profession. Members never stop learning since the
Academy requires a 75-hour schedule of continuing education every
three years. Survey show, however, that members average more than 40
hours each year.
Additional goals our members strive for are Fellowship and Mastership
status. In order to qualify for the Fellowship award, members must
complete a minimum of 500 credit hours of continuing education and
pass a comprehensive 400-question examination. For the Mastership
award, members must receive their Fellowship and then take an
additional 600 hours of continuing education in 16 disciplines of
dentistry, including 400 hours of hands-on courses.
